It's still pretty wintery up here in zone 6 (WA), but I got excited at the current 50 degree weather, so I decided to start some seeds indoors. After much discussion with older gardeners in my area, particularly a bloke called Jonny who has a few acres of land as his 'Ark', I've decided not to grow any F1 hybrid plants. I just cut a Honeydew and a Cantalope and I'm interested in planting both in my garden this spring.  I harvested the seeds out of both melons, but I was wondering what I needed to do to them to get them ready to plant?  Should I wash them?  I have them sitting on two seperate paper towels on my counter right now, but I'm at a loss as to what to do ( Read more... )

I'm in MA, and I tried a Californian Crenshaw melon today. Holy cow, these things are delicious. I'd love to plant some next year. Does anyone know if Crenshaws come true from seed? Or are they some sort of hybrid whose offspring bear no resemblance to their delicious parents? And how do you prepare melon seeds?
